Legislation
The Institute was established in February 1980 under the Australian Family Law Act 1975. The Act sets out the Institute’s role, functions and governance arrangements. The legislated functions of AIFS are:
- to help to identify the factors affecting marital and family stability in Australia by conducting, encouraging and coordinating research; and
- to promote the protection of the family as the fundamental group unit in society.

The Institute’s budget and supplementary budget statements are incorporated into those of the Prime Minister and Cabinet:
Annual Reports
The Institute’s Annual Report tabled in Parliament publicly records its financial performance against budget appropriations and achievements against the outcomes and objectives established by government.
