Australian Family & Society Abstracts / Family & Society Plus
One aspect of the information work of the AIFS Library is the dissemination of the research and information collected and maintained by the Library through the Australian Family & Society Abstracts (FAMILY) database - first produced in 1984. Family & Society Plus, an enhanced version of the database with a full text focus, was launched in 2004.
Australian Family & Society Abstracts (FAMILY)
A bibliographic database that records the research, policy and practice literature about Australian families and the social issues that affect them.
Key facts:
- Covers the literature from 1980 to date and offers over 70,000 citations and abstracts, many of which have links to full text publications on the Web. Publications indexed in the database are drawn from a wide range of social science disciplines including sociology, psychology, demography, health sciences, education, economics, law, history, and social work;
- Source documents include journal articles, conference papers, books, book chapters, government reports, research reports, discussion and working papers, unpublished papers, statistical documents and theses. Journal articles make up approximately 50 per cent of the literature indexed;
- Many items listed are held in the AIFS research library and can be borrowed via interlibrary loan;
- Many non-commercial documents included in the database are free, or can be purchased from the issuing organisation;
- Access is through Informit Online as a standalone subscription database, as part of a collection of social science databases, or as a subject specific subset - AUSThealth or ATSIROM: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collections;

Family & Society Plus
An enhanced version of the Australian Family & Society Abstracts (FAMILY) database developed by the Institute in collaboration with RMIT Publishing. In addition to citations and abstracts, it offers a collection of full text journal articles supplied under licence from journal publishers, as well as links to other full text material available on the internet.

Family Thesaurus
Family Thesaurus is a list of subject terms developed for indexing and retrieving information in the Australian Family & Society Abstracts (FAMILY) database. Terms included in the thesaurus reflect the database's multidisciplinary approach to factors affecting life in Australian society and are drawn directly from the literature being indexed.
The Thesaurus can be used to index documents, whether print or electronic and to organise reading lists and bibliographies. Thesaurus terms are also used to index resources in the AIFS Library catalogue.
